asked:
What ages would this book be appropriate for? I know a 12-year old who I'd love to introduce to the badass women of history, but I don't want it for her if its aimed at older audiences.

I met the author tonight at an event and book signing. He said the book is divided into chapters rated G-R, just like the film rating system. He did say that one nasty word ended up in one G-rated chapter and that adults should ALWAYs read before sharing with children. He also has a blog of the same name that has corrections to the book and things that didn't make it into the book. I hope this helps answer your question.

In the upper corner of each story it' not only rates the badass woman's story along with mentioning any themes that you may not be comfortable with showing to your kid. I wouldn't buy it for a kid but would definitely read some of the awesome stories to my nieces while in my presence.
Hope this helps!

On the authors website is a sampling of stories. Having just read it with my 11 year I think the entries he selected on the website are a good sampling of what is in the book. He's very matter of fact about some subjects that may make you uncomfortable to read with a pre-teen. It depends on your family. He isn't graphic and doesn't necessarily have a lot of details, just matter of fact about things that happen in life. There are mentions of incest, rape, people have mistresses. There are heterosexual, homosexual and bisexual people.
I will also say that my 11 year old boy read it and really liked it. These are stories of people, who are women, who take on the world and everything it could dish out. I think that the stories are rated and may have taboo subjects in the code, added to the excitement but in a good draw you in to history way.

I was going to suggest checking the blog if you want to see what goes on in this book. Depends on the child's maturity too. I was reading "grown up books" at 12. Can't be worse than watching the news.

It's a wonderful book for just about all ages! As long as she knows what she's ready for (or if you do), then she can read individual stories as she pleases. I believe I got this book when I was nine and felt prepared to read the last entry a few years ago, so you really can choose what you wish to read. Each story is rated with a number from 1-5 and with colours from green to yellow to red. At the front of the book, Porath explains the notes: he says that green should be thought of as PG, yellow as PG-13, and red as R. In addition to that, there are other icons that indicate tough topics that are in the story. For example, one of the first stories is a Norwegian fairy tale about a princess who rode a goat. Its maturity level is 1 and has no other icons. One of the later stories is about the well-known Joan of Arc. Its maturity level is 4, and its colour is orange. It also has an icon for violence and self-harm.
Pretty much, as long as she knows what she's ready for, full steam ahead! I hope this helps and if she does read it, I hope she enjoys it as much as I do!

This is a good book, and I have been enjoying reading it. Though I think for a 12 year old, Good Night Stories For Rebel Girls is more appropriate and easier to read.

There are definitely some graphic stories on the blog, I'd read through it first.

In addition to the rating system, he also added specific warnings for things that might be potentially upsetting (rape, violence, etc)
