Courtney asked Gena Showalter:

Hi Gena! I read Firstlife earlier this year and loved it! I can't wait for Lifeblood to come out next year. The cover is absolutely gorgeous! I was wondering how long it usually takes you to write a book?

Gena Showalter Thank you!

Writing a rough draft can take me 30 days (if I write 7 days a week and have no other projects on my plate) But because other projects come in for revisions and edits, weeks or an entire month can be added to the timeline. But. After the 30 days--writing a chapter a day--I need time to fix the draft. So the answer is...3 months from the time I start a book to the time I send it to my editor.

My editor will read it and tell me the problems she had with it. I'll revise it (can take 2 weeks to a month) Then it goes through a line edit, a copy edit and finally a proofread. The entire process can take up to a year. :)
