However, in the Harken Empire one can choose their own gender identity (be it male, female or fluid), in most parts there is no sexism and no one is pressured into a heterosexual relationship, there are also cultures and regions where polyamory is practised.
Allen and Sarrica are biological male and can't produce offspring without a dame (a surrogate woman carrying children for them, though the impregnation has to happen the old-fashioned way).

OK the answer is in the books but you have to get to book 3 to figure it out. Derr's world is very gender fluid. Regardless of physical attributes people can decide to be a man or a woman and no one in the community has a problem with it. So Tara, Nyle and Kamir have breasts and do have internal reproductive organs- vagina, uterus, Fallopian tubes, and ovaries, whereas Allen, Sarrica, Lesthos, Shemal and Jader don't have breasts and do have penises. If a couple wants a child and they don't have the prerequisite parts they can hire a Dame or a Sire - depending on what they need.
