It's a chunk (I read it at 16 and it took me almost a year), but it's a wonderful read and I think it's very appropriate. In terms of content, Hugo is incredibly chaste when it comes to sex (at one point, he gives us two pages about how he can't write about a girl getting dressed, because that's too sexy), and the story itself is incredibly uplifting. Though it's tragic (the title translates roughly to 'The Miserable'), it's a wonderful story. I'd recommend it if you don't mind long tangents and crying.
