Is Betteridge the retainer an African in the book as it is in the BBC mini series on BBC 1? It seems so improbable to have 3 Indian jugglers and an African in what looked like old England. I am intrigued.

Great writing is when the author shows but does not tell... thus crediting readers to draw our own conclusions.
To the credit of the actors in each film / tv version: they are as diverse and intriguing as Betteredge is a literary character.(less)
