In chapter three Betteredge says he does not judge the jugglers from India only because they are a few shades darker than himself. Great writing is when the author shows but does not tell... thus crediting readers to draw our own conclusions.

No! Fascinating casting choice. Leo Wringer, the actor who plays Betteredge is from Jamaica. Betteredge in the text is not described by race, so in 19th c lit, presumably Caucasian. Opinion: I think that the casting choice brings in not just relationship of England and India (imperialism), but also the long history of the repercussions of Carribean slavery. No proof of that, but it makes for an interesting consideration.
