I found this series by reading Tears of the Pearl first (not sure which number that is). It was a great read on it's own, as the author does explain some things in minor detail in anticipation of the reader not having read all the books. After I finished I started from #1 and I am glad that I did. You'll get a little insight into the characters and why certain situations are what they are, but if you read too many books ahead and then try to start again, that will take some of the fun out of the suspense of the books.
