You've mentioned before that Hamish was a bit of a surprise character for you that emerged in A Discovery of Witches because you realized that Matthew need a friend whom he confided in and who understood him. Where there any other unexpected characters that came about as you continued through the trilogy that you didn't anticipate? And if so, how did they affect the plot and the characters they interacted with?

Oh, yes. Gallowglass and Hancock were also unexpected characters. As you might imagine, Gallowglass took up a lot of space when he appeared and things had to change to accommodate a giant, Norse-Gael mercenary.

If you could meet any of the thought leaders from the Age of Enlightenment or the Renaissance, who would your top 3 "dinner companions" be, and why? Would you ever consider writing historical fiction (although Shadow of Night sort of did this, wasn't really a "historic" character) that ties into your academic background?
