Julia I'm a little OCD about reading any series in order, but IMO it is not absolutely necessary for this one. I would read the first 4-5 though to get a feel of the primary characters.
Cindy Mccourt While it is not necessary - each story is complete, I recommend it because you will know more about the charecters as they enter the stories. Also you will understand their personalities and why they are the way they are. I had read one and then started from the beginning. i like it much better that way.
Darlene Torday I agree with the others if you can read them in order, at least in the beginning you will recognize the characters, their roles, their quirks. I began reading around book 8 or 9 and then went back and found the first and have read them all. I'm currently listening on CD to her new one "Apprentice in Death". I hope this series keeps going as it is one of my all time favorites. There was only one she disappointed me with because it felt like a rip off of the old movie, "The Bad Seed".
Kathryn Larsen I would definitely encourage reading at least the first few in order before you start on the others in the series. It is helpful to get to know the primary characters and their relationships to each other before you can started on the others. If possible I would definitely read them in order.
Ashley Christensen My personal feeling is that, yes, they should be read in order. The reason is that even though they can be read as a stand alone story, you know more about the characters and their motivations when you know the whole thing, and why the respond the way they respond.
Nonnie Reads Each book can be read individually ..... but the overall personal story of DALLAS and Roarke and all their friends and family unfolds over the series. I just read the entire series while recovering from surgery and I found that I really enjoyed it that way. But while doing that two new books came out and I read those then went back to the series.
Lee They do reference previous books, but not enough so that you can't follow the current book.

The only time it really makes a difference is in watching the main characters develop over time.
