Hannah
Hannah asked:

Is this kind of like a retelling of The Breakfast Club? There's a brain, a jock, a princess, and a criminal... Plus a gossip.

Karen McManus Hi Hannah, yes, that was the original inspiration -- The Breakfast Club with a criminal twist. I've always been interested in the concept of different types of people being brought together and having to interact with one another, and thought that adding a mystery would raise the stakes in an interesting way.
Teresa Yes same high school types and the story opens with detention hall, but that's where the parallels end. We don't spend much time in detention - the story follows and is not a retelling of The Breakfast Club. Each character's story bears little resemblance to TBC - The brain is a girl this time instead of a boy and there is no "goth" outsider girl or boy. The four characters are a jock baseball player boy, the popular girl (by way of her boyfriend), the smart girl and , the outsider guy. While reading, I didn't once flash on TBC, and I saw that when it originally came out (yes, I liked the outsider - Judd Nelson). Good young adult story that held the attention of this full grown woman.
