Goodreads asked Ria Fritz:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Ria Fritz Rising From the Sand, the first book in the Quicksand series, came from my experiences at my hectic, bizarre day job (which I can't tell you about.) All of the weird internal politics of the Protectorate, including their relationship with the Tioria Police Force, are inspired by my own workplace. Laris is almost a clone of one of my colleagues. I've always taken a heavy interest in radical activism, and make an effort to study causes I don't even agree with, just to see what they're doing and how they're accomplishing it. Some of the "bad guys" throughout Quicksand are based on the kind of irrational, desperate, do-whatever-you-can-to-slow-down-the-enemy mentality you sometimes see in truly extremist groups.

The setting, though, was definitely influenced by the Trigun anime. Not even gonna try to make it sound more sophisticated than it is.
