Penelope Douglas I'm absolutely aggravated with it. The actors being cast in these roles definitely have my love. Scarlett Johansson, for example, is someone whose films I enjoy. She chooses her parts well, and I believe she's a capable actress. But that's beside the point. The decision to recast these roles comes from higher up, and it further disenfranchises non-whites. How do children in these communities feel, and what message are they getting when their heroes in literature (or manga) are recast to appease a superficial market that's trying to push it's version of beauty and bravery? The message they're taking away is that they don't fit that vision. It's so sad.

And I'm nervous. Of course I am. Maybe less will read Hideaway, because Kai is half-Japanese, and it doesn't fulfill their version of beauty, but Kai is what he is. He's always been Asian, and I'm telling his story. ;)
