The answer to this question is different for each individual. For me there is a rhythm to the writing process. This involves research, writing and rewriting; not necessarily in that order. When one part of this process becomes difficult, I devote time to one of the other elements.
Also, I never work on only one project at a time, and this usually means I can switch from fiction to non-fiction. Then, there's always COFFEE!
