A Goodreads user asked Jacqueline E. Smith:

In relation with Mel and Sam's relationship as 'best friends', what do you think is the difference of close friend and best friend?

Jacqueline E. Smith For me, a best friend is someone you can be 100% yourself around. You can tell them anything. You can drop every pretense, every facade around that person and be absolutely honest and genuine. I can think of only two people I'd trust with my true self like that.

A close friend is just that. Very close. I am compulsively honest, so I don't have very many secrets, but I'm not likely to let my guard down and appear vulnerable around a close friend the way I am around a best friend. :)
