I would definitely put this book in the 4.5 star rating it's getting. I would also put it in the same class as The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed out the Window and A Man Called Ove. It's a wonderful story about courage and redemption and acceptance and.... I stayed up way too late a few nights because I just couldn't turn it off. And I cried at the end.

I can't imagine this as an audio book as I don't believe it lends itself well to that format. I would recommend reading this, not an audio version.

Are you understanding it? I listened to it on audio and had some trouble in the beginning understanding who was who and what period of time we were in. But once I figured that out, I LOVED it. Like hit replay loved it, because I didn't want the story to be over. Then I was really able to pick up nuances that I missed.
Paula
It didn't for me. I made it halfway and that's where I stopped.
Lea
same here, I'm on Chapter 19 and still hoping it will get better. I've abandoned this book once but this time around, I'm determined to finish it
Marcia
I loved the audio version, this book kept me sitting in the driveway, unable to turn it off, again and again.
Jennifer Crowder
The last few chapters make up for all of it, they really do. But then, I didn't do audio, and I'm sure it affects how the story comes across...

I just returned the audible after about a third of the way through. I couldn't handle the reader - so dry! I found myself avoiding listening to the book which is never a good sign! Hope it would have gotten better but I couldn't stick it out!
Kelly Stokes
Tried it on audio book but had to stop. I'm not sure I want to actually read it either though. Maybe some day!
Jean Gobel
By all means, finish it. It has a few slow spots, but definitely do finish. You will enjoy it.
Diane Schuller
often times the hype ruins a book purely by giving unrealistic expectations. Yes, I too found it got a little bland in the middle but it absolutely makes up for that blandness in the final third.
Chris
I am reading it, and am 40% in .... have stopped it once as I found it dry and difficult to connect all the characters, but have picked it up again. From most of the comments here, sounds like it's about to pick up .....
Beth
Oh yes, but actually read the book. The audio version doesn't capture the richness of this book and I don't often have that problem as I listen to a great number of audio books. One of the best books I have read in a long time!
Sarah
For me, it did get better. It was slow starting but I really did enjoy the last 1/3 - 1/2 of it. For those that listened to the audio - I have my speed set at 1.25 x (as a default) and it was so much better at that speed than at 1.0.

I also listened to this book. I learned something about myself as a reader. When a story has such layers and characters, I need to READ the print so I can do more back and forth. I will reread this one when I can get a copy! I still thought it was worth it, but I think it would have been more satisfactory.
Holly
It took me a while to get into it but luckily I was on a three hour road trip so I persevered. By the end, I thought it was funny that I thought the narrators voice was so terrible in the beginning.
