It's a great chronicle of the origins of slavery and how it impacts future generations of families. If she's seen Roots, Underground, or any of the recent movies/mini series on slavery this is fine. I've read far more graphic books about slavery.

If I had a 13 year old I'd let them read Homegoing.(less)
