This might be too little too late, but as someone who teaches 13-year-olds, I think this book might be too adult.
The book contains sexual themes, rape, violence, and drug use.
My suggestion would be to read the book yourself first (it was amazing, you won't regret it) and then decide if you think it's appropriate and/or if you're ready to have some candid discussions with your child to help them understand the themes.
Just my opinion...

While reading, I thought about how much my young adult self would have liked this book. At 13, you are entering a world in which books contain not just stories but actual emotion. This book will provide your teenager the opportunity to step into and experience another world far from his/her own. Highly recommend. I also agree with Nicole that you should read the book as well. There are some scenes that your child might want to discuss.

Most definitely!.. not only appropriate but gives a detailed female account, which is what isn't found in history books.

I think this is an appropriate book for a 13 year old, especially since she is a voracious reader. It's a great chronicle of the origins of slavery and how it impacts future generations of families. If she's seen Roots, Underground, or any of the recent movies/mini series on slavery this is fine. I've read far more graphic books about slavery.
If I had a 13 year old I'd let them read Homegoing.
