Ariel Alejandro
Ariel Alejandro asked Rachel Caine:

How on earth did you come up with the Weather Warden series? That series single-handedly got me into reading 10 years ago and it still wears the crown as my favorite fantasy series with Firestorm being the crown jewel.

Rachel Caine Oh, thank you so much! I moved to the Texas Panhandle for college, and for the first time encountered tornadoes. I thought they were FASCINATING. And for a while, it seemed to me like everywhere I went, there was a tornado alert (actually, that's just normal springtime there). But I began to imagine the weather was following me around. The story went through a couple of iterations about the causes until I finally added in the Djinn and everything finally click together. I think I wrote the original draft of ILL WIND in 1999, but it finally sold in 2002.

Also: thanks for saying that about Firestorm. I wrote that in a very difficult time; I was diagnosed with breast cancer and going through treatments, and in many ways that book was tougher than any other I've done. So it means a lot to hear that!

(I'm fine now, btw!)
