Read, write, repeat. While you're at it, never be satisfied with the superficial. Find ways to evoke feelings in your readers. Challenge yourself and your readers to think. The stories I enjoy most are stories that either make me FEEL something or make me think (or both). Not surprisingly, I think those are also the most fulfilling to write.
