Goodreads asked Dirk Sayers:

Who is your favorite fictional couple, and why?

Dirk Sayers Wow...singular? I only get one? I'll give you three. From Pride & Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy, because of how their mutual regard grew out of mutual distaste. From Turgenev's Fathers and Sons, Arcady Kirsanov and Katya Lokteva, because of the complementary way they grow together and the depth of their almost symbiotic understanding. From Winds of War and War & Remembrance, the troubled Leslie Slote and Natalie Jastrow. While they never "stick" as a couple, their bond endures throughout and Slote's eventual death adds poignant depth to an already terrific story.
