I would definitely read "The Sword of Shannara" trilogy first (noting that there is an astronomical jump in writing quality between the first and second books) as is the recommended reading order, but you needn't follow the list so adamantly after that.

I think it would help. I just finished this and it's my first brooks novel. I think I would have been completely lost at some points if I hadn't watched the Shannara Chronicles TV series. Especially during the elf sections. Honestly, this book is really disorganized. I don't know if Brook's other novels are better, but this was not a good introduction to his writing.

Not at all-they are set much earlier in the Shannara universe, just after the collapse of modern society.
