Sorry for the long delay in response. Been working on the revisions to SKULLSWORN.

The Kettral sprung out of my desire to write a fantasy equivalent of modern special forces. Fantasy is replete, obviously, with bands of elite warriors, but the training, the specialization, the mobility, and even the institutional bureaucracy isn't usually codified in most fantasy worlds the way it is in ours. So, to answer your question, the Kettral are, at least to my mind, one of the most contemporary aspects of the book. Even the birds originally came from my desire to have a transport and weapons system analogous to helicopters...
