If you're looking for a book about the Manson murders, look elsewhere. This is a meditation on girls (specifically girls, not women), on the power they have over men and their simultaneous impotence in the patriarchy. It is devastating. I have never been a girl, but I met my wife when she was one (relax, we were both 17) and now we have an 18 year old daughter who is one.

Cline expresses this dichotomy better than anyone outside of Austen and Tolstoy and I do not make those comparisons lightly. This may be the best debut novel since The Secret History. Of all the new novelists you heard of this year or last, Cline is the only one whose writing will still be interesting 10 years from now.(less)
