The movie John Wick is (very) loosely based on the book.

They made the author's first book into a movie with Clint Eastwood and the author hated it. So he wouldn't give up the rights to this - oh. Someone else has already answered this. Ah well. There's also a scene in this book that takes place completely in the dark and I almost wondered if Trevanian deliberately tried to make this unfilmable.

Trevanian has the copyright of the book. He did not like the adaptation of the eiger sanction, which was made from his novel, and therefore does not sell shibumi's movie rights to anyone.
