A Goodreads user asked Mark Lawrence:

What was the first book - or the book in general - you read that made you think, "Y'know, I'd like to give this whole writing thing a try one day"?

Mark Lawrence I gave the story-writing thing a try because I enjoyed writing in other situations. I wasn't inspired to it by any book. My normal reaction to reading a book was to be certain that I couldn't write anything so good.

Having written a book (with no ambition to publish it) I was semi-inspired to try for publication by reading truly terrible fantasy novel that I won't name (and that to my great surprise has a Goodreads rating of 3.58). I read it and thought that the author must have been married to the publisher, or, failing that, that if they could get published then even I might be able to.
