My mother was from a coal mining town and I never heard her use the word "butty". English dictionary definition of butty. n , chiefly dialect Northern English a sandwich. Did the author mean to use butty or buddy?

Specifically, in English coal-mining, one who takes a contract, or is a partner in a contract, for working out a certain area of coal. I hope that answers your question.
