I believe it is around the same time period of Rangers Apprentice. I remember in one RA book it mentions Hal. I highly recommend reading rangers apprentice first, though.

I read the first 3 books of Ranger Apprentice, but didn't enjoy it. My friend told me that this was better, and I got hooked :)
If you are going to read this book, I would recommend getting an idea of who some of the rangers from Ranger's Apprentice are, because a couple of them appear later in the books.
Basically, read the first couple Ranger's Apprentice books first (you can read all of them if you want), but at least read the first few so you know who the characters are in the later books.

It's after Erak's Ransom, but the two stories are pretty separate from each other until Slaves of Sorocco. But even in that book we don't see Will or Halt. I would recommend reading Ranger's Apprentice first, but I think you could read either and still get the same amount of enjoyment from them.
