Difficult question.
It may sound a bit embarrassing, but I began my first novel after reading what I considered a really crappy fantasy book. And the author had dozens of books published by a big name publishing company. I arrogantly thought that I could do better than that. Well I hope I have. My novel Falling Down the Aether Sky and the sequel Approaching the Well of Still Time (TBreleased August 7) are dystopian cyberpunk, not fantasy. But I had to admit, writing is challenging and difficult. I now write because I love to and it is a challenge. Since I still am full time employed, I don't get to write nearly as much as I would like to, but I keep plugging away. I am starting a new series Cataclysmic Realm: The Clan of the Poisoners, which is not quite fantasy, but more world building taking place about 10,000 years in the future. This is taking lots of environmental research. I also want to bring into my book social/technological and environmental issues that are important to me, but are not to dominate in the book.
