(view spoiler)[In the end, what happens to Pickles from your Riyria series? I noticed that he was still alive even though Arcadius told Hadrian he was dead so that Hadrian would actually go through his mission with Royce. I don't recall any mention of him later on. I understand that he is a student but can you provide any more details regarding how his life turned out? (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I hope to ;-). Let me fill you in a bit about Pickles. He was created when I started the prequel series (The Riyria Chronicles) and in the original version of that book, he died -- really died. But a number of the beta readers, and one in particular, really liked him and were said to see him go. So in the final released version I brought him back at the end of the book to show that he and Arcadius had been working together and there was something else going on with the kid than what any of us (including Royce and Hadrian) suspected.
My thought process is he could be a cool thread to pull on in the future. If I indeed had any future Riyria Chronicle books. I say "if" because I'm not sure how many chronicles will exist. My plan is to release a book, then judge how people are feeling and if they want more...well I'll put out another one. I've actually outlined all the books from The Crown Tower until they would bump up against Theft of Swords (book #1 & #2 of The Riyria Revelations). Will all of them get written? Don't know. It will depend on if the pair seem to be overstaying their welcome or not.
A lot of people expect to see him again in Revelations. But those books were written and published long before the idea of Pickles came to me, so no he's not found in this books. As to how his life turned out...well I don't want to say that now because (a) I don't want to provide a spoiler for future books that may be written and (b) what I think of his future at this moment may change by the time I get to writing. You see, there is what I think will happen but that often changes as I write.
Stay tuned! (hide spoiler)]

Hi, Michael! I'm reading Wintertide at the moment and the whole series is absolutely brilliant! (I am not saying this in order to flatter you only to get my question answered, I really mean it!) So the question - If someone is trying to write a book, but in the same time is reading books he is loving and are inspiring him, will this affect the book he is writting in a way either as a story or atmosphere?

Hey Michael! First off, I want to say how much I enjoyed Age of Myth. It not only makes me look forward to the other books in the series, but also makes me want to dive into your other worlds. What advice would you give writers who have ideas for a novel, but are scared to start or don't know where to start? Whether it's a fear of failure or worry that the idea isn't flushed out enough, what would you tell them?
