Goodreads asked Lawana Blackwell:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Lawana Blackwell Read well-written fiction published within the past thirty years, and study how the author handles dialogue, point-of-view, settings, characterization. If your story is about 70% realistic, natural, dialogue, you're on the right track. Speak your dialogue to see if it sounds natural. Learn how to use POV (point of view) correctly and your work will stand out to an editor (this was told me by an editor). Don't allow fear to hold you back, as it did me. Believe in yourself, but be teachable!
