Alana ~ The Book Pimp
asked:
Is this just a ripped-off funnier version of the movie Lady Jane? Based upon the blurb it sounds EXACTLY like it. Perhaps I'm showing my age because it's an older, and likely slightly obscure movie, but I happened to adore this film decades ago.

I guess I'm old too then! It's a true story, so I don't think it's necessarily a rip off, but I'm kind of curious as to how they turn a tragic story of a child manipulated by her family to the point of her execution into a funny light hearted book.

The movie Lady Jane is based on actual history and this book is loosely based on the same history. That's where the resemblance ends.

The story covered by the movie is true, so that's why there are similarities..the book, like the movie, are riffs on the same history. In tone and outcome, they are absolutely nothing alike. It's a great movie!

It's not a rip-off. It does nod it's head at the film (though it's very subtle). It's a fantasy injected comedy that rewrites history. I also enjoyed the film and have long been interested in the story of the nine day queen. I am a little more than half way through it. I don't want it to end. It has multiple pov's, so if that's not your thing, you probably won't like it, but it's all third person omniscient, so you could give it a shot.

No, it isn't. It just takes from the same chapter of history like the other reviewers have said, but while we're on the topic of the movie . . . Cary Elwes . . . in that one scene, when he comes into the room and says Jane's name! Seriously takes my breath away.
Elizabeth
It's not a rip-off. It rewrites the history of King Henry VIII in a comedic way, adding a magical element.

I would have to agree with you Alana, it's much more than a 'subtle nod' if we both thought exactly the same thing from the description. But I could also tell straight away from the blurb that the writers were American.
Lori
The authors' are definately familiar with the movie but its not exactly like it.
