There is a reference in the author's notes at the end, where he mentions that our Founding Fathers desperately wanted Canada to become part of our country and they added to the Articles of Confederation to automatically join via the language for that to occur if Canada so desired. But power-hungry individuals who pushed invasions destroyed that happening. We should consider it lucky we are allies despite these attempts.
