Can anyone explain the significance of Mrs. Maggie and her husband, Tom? I felt like there was something more to this than the story explained. Maybe it's super obvious to everyone else, but I felt lost. Any explanation or theory would be much appreciated.

I’m guess she confused the killer as her husband, he killed her- police and stuff transpired, but you’d think that happening (full trash bags not full of trash, being removed) would be news too big for the narrators mother to keep from him.
