What inspired you to write about genetically altered humans who can live in the sea?

Hi Jinky, I have to say a number of factors inspired me. Growing up in Colorado where we are a little short on oceans, I've always been fascinated by the sea. I also am very concerned about climate change. Finally, I keep up on the advances in genetic engineering. I think it's both wonderful and frightening what's happening in that field of science. We are not far away from being able to order up "designer babies" or super soldiers. Most of all, though, I wanted to tell an adventure story that would appeal to girls. I wrote the kind of book I wanted to read when I was young, and that seems to be resonating with lots of kids and their parents. Thanks for the great question!

I just read The Neptune Project, and I want to know... What year does the book take place in and what exactly is the Western Collective? And what made you decide to use the Euginics Wars from Star Trek, and why did Robry look at his feet? (I'm assuming it was to see if they look flipper-like, but how did he know anything about it if they did? Why didn't he think he just had fused toes if they were?)
