Recommended, definitely, but as long as you're okay with a good amount of plot holes, then you might make it okay.
I didn't finish the last two books in the Heroes of Olympus series and I got by okay (1-3 plot holes), but this book does refer to the PJO series a lot (past characters and whatnot).
Give this book a shot and if it doesn't work out -- don't drop it! Give the original series a shot first! :)
