Helen-Marie Rivera
Helen-Marie Rivera asked Mary Kubica:

Where is your "go to" place to help inspire and help structure your characters and the town that the story is set in? Do you visualize it first or go to a random town and just study the people and the town?

Mary Kubica Most of my novels are set partially in Chicago, which is where I'm from. But each have another Midwestern component, be it rural Minnesota, Nebraska or Michigan's Harbor Country. Before writing the novels, I was familiar with Nebraska (I lived there for awhile) and the Michigan setting (many childhood vacations), but I'd never been to Minnesota before. I replied solely on research to bring that setting to life, but was able to visit it before The Good Girl was published and was elated to discover it to be exactly as I'd dreamed it to be.
