Iris
Iris asked Michael Grant:

Caine Soren is a fascinating character to me. Where did the inspiration for his character come from?

Michael Grant I was looking for a counter-weight to Sam. I needed someone smart, strong-willed and ruthlessly self-absorbed. I always thought of Caine as bad but not quite evil, a rotten bastard but redeemable. I did not plan the ending for him, as always I just wrote til it came to me, but I did always sort of hold out hope that Caine would mature. The fact that it was love for and from Diana that saves him is quite personal to me, since in my life that was the role my wife played for me.
