A Goodreads user asked Michael Grant:

In your bio, you wrote, '2) I know how to end a series' and if killing all the favourite characters (Brianna, Jack, LP, Caine, and others) and leaving all the annoying characters alive (Astrid, Diana, Quinn, Sam - sometimes, actually not, he's whiny) and maybe by mistake doing something good (leaving Dekka alive, and Edilio, Roger) I wouldn't call that a good end to the series!!! Maybe others but not Gone!!?

Michael Grant You're looking for a happy ending, I want the right ending. Happy endings are easy, they take no skill. But they are also unsatisfying because everyone knows that happiness is temporary. A happy ending just kicks the can down the road, and the reader's only happy so long as they don't wonder, "Then what?" Life ends in death, kid, which is neither happy nor sad, but is true.
