We haven't spoken for a while but I just read your reply about When Breathe Becomes Air and have just started it. I hope your book is coming along nicely. I have read some wonderful books so far this year I hope this one is as good as everyone says it is. A Little Life nearly destroyed me, what a story. I love reading what other people think of your book, you have helped so many, better than any review from a critic?

Great to be back in touch! And the new book is coming along, thanks. I have a draft now so am taking a few weeks away from it. It's great to go back to it with semi-fresh eyes after a little time apart. A Little Life nearly destroyed me, too. That's one of my favorite books not just from last year, but from the last few years. I think it's such a privilege to read what people write about my book, mostly because people often share stories from their own lives. There are so many stories to tell and share. And it's also a real privilege when readers write directly to me -- through Goodreads or other methods. I'm really looking forward to having the new book out so I can get back on the road and meet more people. I've stopped doing that for a while, just so I can get this done. Definitely hoping my travels will include Australia!

I was hoping you might recommend a book (or books)? There are lots of books out there about coping with loss, but most seem centered on the loss that comes with the death of a loved one. I'm looking for recommendations for books (fiction or non) that explore different kinds of loss--loss that comes from disappointment and major life change or having to give up certain dreams or ideas you may have had for your life.

I recognized the description of Chris Maxey in the short review in "The New Yorker" of WE SHOULD NOT BE FRIENDS. Your memoir is about Maxey who started Island School? I look forward to reading your memoir, as my son was there in Fall 2007 when Eleuthera took an almost direct hit from Hurricane Noel. The students had so much respect for (combined with a bit of fear of) Maxey. Island School was life-changing for Seth.
