How hard was it to find an agent whom you wanted to work with? Does that happen after you submit your draft or before? What are your thoughts on self-publishing? Thanks in advance Ms Sepetys. I'm a librarian and I am curious about these things.

Hi Adrienne, great questions! The process of finding an agent that you want to work with is different for everyone. Initially, I submitted a mystery novel and just the first chapter of Between Shades of Grey. The agent advised that my authentic voice was in historical fiction, and I'm so grateful that he did. I couldn't say what's best for everyone regarding self-publishing or working with a publisher, but I can say that I wrote and re-wrote Between Shades of Grey countless times before it sold to a publisher. It was a journey that took many years, but I really enjoyed it.
