Sites like Amazon make it incredibly easy to self publish your work. It takes all of 10 minutes to submit your book through Amazon's ebook publishing tool. Many authors are going this route. If you want to make the jump to having hard copies of your books, there are many print on demand companies out who will print only a handful of your books at a time (for a fee, of course).
If you're looking to go the traditional publishing route and want to look for an agent and then a publishing company who will market your book for you, it is a much more difficult process. I personally haven't had any luck with it. There are so many authors out there that most agents and publishers are extremely picky and only go for books that they are confident will be best sellers.
That's not to say it's impossible, however.

Ann Livi Andrews:
Hi, I'm thinking of offering my services in manuscript conversion, interior formatting and design to a couple of indie authors in exchange for recommendations and/or honest reviews regarding my work. The Support for Indie Authors group seems a great place to start. However, I'm unsure if that's appropriate or not? Any direction in this matter would be genuinely appreciated. Thank you!
