Gerald Swick The first DCI Banks novel I read was A Dry Season. My wife and I both enjoyed it so much we bought the first book in the series and now have all but one of them. I have to do a lot of reading for research for my own writing, so I read the first couple in the series, then moved on. Last year I decided I was going to read them all, in sequence, including reading A Dry Season again. It certainly isn't essential to read them in sequence, but unlike many mystery series, the recurring characters in these books evolve, so it is more rewarding to read them sequentially.
Swarprasad Mukundh Am currently reading this without reading the other ones in the series. To be honest, I never felt this requires to be read in order of book series. Inspector Banks was introduced pretty well (esp at the last page) you can feel the life of each character by the way it is narrated. Excellent book!
George Yes, but the Chief Inspector's relationships evolve over time, so there is some reward in reading them in order. However, I wouldn't expect you to be baffled if you read only this one, and the semi-spoilers for previous installments shouldn't bother you.

One thing, though: This one flips back and forth between 1969 and the 2007 present. I suspect that having met Banks before makes that less disorienting, but not knowing him shouldn't ruin anything.
