Hi Brian! Just finished the Last Mortal Bond and it was absolutely amazing. One of the best fantasy stories I've read in recent years. I simply could not put it down until I finished reading it. Your characters are all so interesting and well developed - what is your process when creating these characters and their story arcs? Also, any chance we'll see some early stories of Flea and his wing in the future?

My process has been--and this might not be an entirely satisfying answer--to follow the characters where they lead. For instance, I expected early on in writing TLMB that Valyn would go back to the Islands, rally the shattered Kettral, and get his redemption. Every time I tried to write that, however, it didn't work. He was just too busted after Providence. It felt forced. So then I needed to get into his head to figure out what he WOULD do. It can be a scary way to write, but the other way doesn't really work for me.
And yes, there will absolutely be a Flea book at some point. I've signed on with TOR (US and UK) for four more, one of which will probably be about him... (hide spoiler)]

I have 2 questions that I hope you can answer: 1) During the course of the series we discover that what distinguishes the Csestriim from their human descendants is the influence of the young gods on the latter. But what metaphysical causes distinguishes the Csestriim from the Nevariim they destroyed? 2) We know that the young gods are the "children" of Ciena and Meshkent, but where do the old gods come from? Thanks!
