What inspired the concept of the vaniate, and how a person acts when they have achieved it?

Brian Staveley Thanks for the question, Rex. The inspiration was party the Buddhist notion of nirvana, partly certain passages from the Tao Te Ching and the Chuang Tze, and partly pulled out of the depths of my own head. The historical inspirations were very helpful at the start, but by now the vaniate has really evolved into its own thing inside these books. You'll see more of it in The Providence of Fire...
