Lilian asked Ruta Sepetys:

Hi Ruta! I really enjoyed Salt to the Sea and can't wait to get to Between Shades of Grey. I am curious, 1) What's your favourite quote? 2) Since your academic background & career and books are so diverse. Are there any intersections? How did your career influence your writing? If you are ever in East Africa coast ( read: Kenya) , please let us know.

Ruta Sepetys Hi Lillian!

I have always wanted to visit East Africa, ever since I read "West With the Night" by Beryl Markham. Answers to your questions:

• It's hard to choose just one favorite quote. I have so many that I love. Here is one:
"Raise your words, not your voice. It is rain that grows flowers, not thunder."
- Rumi

• Yes, there are definitely intersections between my careers in music and writing. Rhythm and melody is one intersection. After spending 20+ years with songwriters I learned how powerful rhythm and melody are in any creative project. Rhythm and melody make a phrase memorable. I keep that in mind while writing and I read my work aloud to listen to the flow.
