Hi Alpha!
I think many authors weave familiar people and experiences into their novels. I certainly do. If I have first-hand experience with a feeling or situation, that helps me convey it in the story with a sense of emotional truth. Whenever I'm experiencing something difficult I try to console myself by saying, "Well, this is awful now, but one day it will be great in a book." :-)

I loved Out of the Easy but it was hard for me to read Between Shades of Grey and especially Salt to the Sea because... I am Russian. As much as I hate the committed atrocities, I remain patriotic and wish you depicted the great sufferings the Russian nation had to endure during the war. No one likes to be a bad guy. Is this something you might consider for a book in the future? Thank you, Olya Coffin
