Visiting friends in Taiwan was definitely an inspiration for some of the settings in this book. At the Fort of Hongmao Cheng, now a museum, I got to see relics and artifacts from the days of piracy on the South China Sea. And the rich tropical environment made a great setting for the on-shore portions of West's adventures.
