I suggest going to amazon or the publisher's site and read the first few pages. They all have different takes on how to translate, so find the opening that grabs you the most.

How about an abbreviated version with pictures I could read with my 8 year old son? Anyone have any ideas on that? That's how we got going with the Illiad and the Odyssey; I'd like to do that with a major work from Chinese culture too.

I haven't read the Iverson translation, but, for me, the Roberts's translation is preferable to the Brewitt-Taylor one. Roberts has extensive, illuminating endnotes. Without access to those notes, I doubt I would have appreciated the Brewitt-Taylor translation much at all. (If you know more about ancient Chinese history than I do, this may not be as important.)
