Kim asked Eloisa James:

Hmm - So what happens to your profit when book covers are ripped off and books are sent back?

Eloisa James HI there, Kim! There is no profit when a book cover is ripped off. That's why publishers ask that people don't buy books with covers ripped off -- it means that someone in a bookstore allowed a book to be counted as "unsold" by sending back the cover and then it went into the market to be sold anyway.

But honestly, that's a drop in the bucket compared to the numbers of people who steal books by pirating them. It's such a drag.
