jas asked Alice Oseman:

Radio Silence definitely revolves around an important message for teenagers - do you think it's important that teen books teach messages?

Alice Oseman I don't think 'important' is the word I'd use... I mean, what is the point of books? What's their purpose? Is it to teach messages? Is it to tell a story? I study English literature at degree level and even I have no idea!

I write books because I have 'something to say', or many 'somethings to say' - something that makes me angry, something that I love, something that I think is important. So for me, when writing books, it's important that I have a message to express. But I don't think that's the case for everybody! Some books just set out to tell a gripping story, and that's perfectly okay too.

So I wouldn't say it was 'important'. But for me, it's definitely a good thing.
